Blue fin tuna is an endangered species, despite its availability in fish markets. In fact, eating tuna in general is akin to eating another top predator like a tiger. If you care about the oceans, please do not eat any tuna species. If you must, refer to sustainable seafood guides like Monterrey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program. They even put out a sustainable sushi guide:

New Deal is my favorite fishmonger. I stop by at least twice a week. I just had some of their raw salmon today, actually. Usually I get the whole fish--scup, branzino, mackerel, sardines... They're great people there, and always have great advice about how to cook the fish.

For my birthday two years ago my Mom and her bf made me sushi. they did a fantastic job. no, the rolls were not as tight as professionals, or the nigiris lines weren't as crisp, and yes it was expensive! but it tasted amazing. and I definitley consider myself and avid sushi eater and critic! wherever they got their sushi, (somewhere on cape cod) it was a big win.

If you like raw fish and don't want to go through the hassle of making sushi, maybe a poke would be the answer. I enjoy making poke as a meal its very quick and easy and their are so many different recipes, and if you already have some Asian products at home, you probably have everything you already need.

I'm a huge fan of New Deal. One of my former classmates worked there as a side job during grad school, so I'd stop by once in awhile. Every fish I bought there was amazing, and Carl and his staff really know what they're talking about.

i often wonder if people can really taste the difference between good food and bad food, or whether they are just driven by ideology/reputation of a place. i too heard the rave reviews about new deal, from friends who were japanese and friends who weren't. but when we went there (got salmon and hamachi) a couple of years ago, i was pretty disappointed. the salmon was very bland and not very fresh-tasting, the hamachi was slightly fishy (as you said!). the prices are high compared to other places (e.g. reliable market in somerville, or HMart), especially for the condiments/accompaniments such as tempura flakes or pickled ginger. I think people are just excited that a portuguese(?) place is so ... cosmopolitan, that it carries asian products at all.

right now my favorite source of sushi fish is actually the flash-frozen stuff at whole foods. while its deliciousness varies, (for the salmon at least, sometimes it's really flavorful, sometimes kind of bland) it's always fresh-tasting. also i like the convenience of having it in the freezer, and only thawing as much as you need when you feel like sushi. this may indicate that I eat sushi too often, heh. and i believe WF is also cheaper than New Deal.
